Wise About Waste: The National Strategy for Wales 2002

By Wise about Waste: The National Strategy for Wales (2002) commits the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) to lead a waste minimisation campaign across the public sector in Wales in order to:

  • make a contribution to the overall reduction in waste and the sustainable management of resources;
  • ensure that the public sector plays its role in improving the environment
  • provide a good example for the private sector to follow;
  • help reduce public spending now and in anticipation of future increases in cost of waste disposal

Targets have been set in Wise About Waste for the public sector:

  • By 2005, achieving a reduction in waste produced equivalent to at least 5% of the 1998 arising figures;
  • By 2010, achieving a reduction in waste produced  equivalent to at least 10% of the 1998 waste arising figures.
  • Where no 1009 baseline figures exists, then a reduction in waste of 1% per annum
