War on waste is urgent for Wales

16 February 2010

WALES must continue to change and improve the way it deals with waste as a matter of urgency, experts have warned.

According to the Institution of Civil Engineers Wales Cymru, waste management should be high on the agenda if the effects of climate change are to be reduced.

Speaking at the National Waste Management and Climate Change Conference in Cardiff, Keith Jones, director of ICE Wales Cymru, said: “We have to change the way we view waste. Waste management is one of the most important issues facing us all.

“We are all generally doing well in cutting down on the waste we produce and recycling more as individuals and companies, however we can all do more by reusing products – whether reusing carrier bags on shopping trips or reusing aggregate on construction sites. We must also look at innovative ways of dealing with waste – we cannot continue to send our waste to landfill. We must address the waste agenda with utmost urgency.”

Delegates heard from the Environment Agency, the Welsh Local Government Association, the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management and the Welsh Assembly Government.

Jane Davidson, Environment Minister, said: “We must work together to prevent waste in the first instance and that is where our priority must lie.”
