Wales Public Sector Waste and Sustainability Awards 2010 - Winners
The winners of the Wales Public Sector Waste and Sustainability Awards 2010, which took place in Cardiff on Thursday 11 February 2010, were as follows:
Resource Efficiency Excellence Award - National Library of Wales.
The National Library for Wales has taken a structured and considered approach which was enabled by the setting of clear objectives and targets and a detailed action plan. The National Library for Wales clearly demonstrated that addressing a few key areas can have a significant impact on waste arising, energy use and ultimately reduce costs.
Sustainability Award - Coleg Llandrillo.
Coleg Llandrillo has achieved Green Dragon level five and the judges recognised that maintaining this as an institution of further education was no easy feat. The college also demonstrated that sustainability to them meant not only managing and minimising environmental impact but also that looking after the wellbeing of staff and students was important. Coleg Llandrillo takes considerable steps to get involved with community projects, recognising that it is in the privileged position of not only educating but benefiting society both locally and globally.
Innovation Award - University of Wales Newport.
The University of Wales Newport's bio-diesel project really captured the judges attention because this project really demonstrated innovative thinking in the public sector. This was a project that went beyond finding a company to take the cooking oil and manufacture biodiesil for its own benefit. By buying in the equipment and learning how to produce bio-diesel out of cooking oil themselves, the University of Wales Newport has been able to reduce the carbon emissions, fuel consumption and costs which they incur in the running of their campus tractor and postal vans.
Green Star Champion Award - Jamie Lewis, Her Majesty's Court Services Wales.
One of the things that impressed the judges most about this entry was that Jamie was nominated by a colleague who felt strongly enough about his achievements and commitment to improving the environmental performance of HMCS. This entry stood out because in a short space of time, Jamie has become recognised as a champion for sustainability for HMCS across the UK and is regularly called upon to give inspiring presentations to colleagues at other sites. What was most outstanding, was that Jamie has achieved this status in addition to delivering his normal day job, such is his commitment.
Special Commendation - City and County of Swansea, Corporate Building Services.
The Corporate Building Services division of the City and County of Swansea originally applied for three of these awards with three different projects/activities although none stood out on their own. What was apparent to the judges was that this was a single department that dealt with waste from the refurbishment and repair of council domestic housing stock. The team demonstrated a thorough understanding of their waste arisings through this activity and from this have made significant reductions in waste sent to landfill. They have done this by working extremely hard to engage their colleagues. They have imbedded sustainability and resource efficiency right through their division from induction training through to driving vans. This has made such an impact that staff feel empowered to introduce their own ideas of how the do things differently to reduce waste. City and County of Swansea, Corporate Building Services really epitomised the PSWMC strapline "Changing the way we work".
