Vale of Glamorgan schools again rise to the green challenge

19 February 2010

Christmas cards and Yellow Pages directories have been pouring into Vale of Glamorgan schools in conjunction with two popular recycling initiatives.

Recognising just how keen young people are on recycling, the Vale Council has organised the Christmas card project and supported the national Yellow Pages scheme for many years. And, this year, 47 schools are participating in one or both projects.

With the Yellow Pages scheme on hold in 2010, the council is running a Vale-wide project to ensure that local schools can still recycle the directories.

Delighted to be taking part in the Christmas card project is Llanfair Primary School, and headteacher Diane Normansell said: "Our pupils love this recycling project. It really seems to grab their imagination and, in the past, one of our pupils, Maddie-Jo, won top primary pupil honours for the most cards collected. The enthusiasm is as high this year."

There are some great prizes up for grabs with both schemes and, with those based on pupil numbers, even the smallest schools have a winning chance.

Last year’s Yellow Pages winning school in the Vale, St Helen’s Roman Catholic Junior in Barry, collected a fantastic nine directories per pupil - an achievement that also brought the school a national award and more than £1,000 in prize money.

Vale Council cabinet member for visible and building services Cllr Geoff Cox was keen to thank the schools for their involvement. He said: "The support for recycling from Vale schools is always phenomenal and again this year the number of schools taking part speaks for itself. I am really looking forward to hearing how well our schools have done."
