Public sector survey aims to reduce waste

9 December 2008

A Wales-wide survey of public sector organisations is being carried out as part of an Welsh Assembly led campaign to minimise waste and benefit the environment.

The survey will identify both the type and quantity of different waste generated by public sector organisations in Wales. It will help build a clear picture of the public sector's total ecological footprint, based on the amount of materials used and waste produced, and this will help shape future policy.

The survey is being managed by Envirowise as part of the Public Sector Waste Minimisation Campaign that is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government.

The campaign is promoting greater environmental efficiency in public sector organisations - large and small - including local authorities, schools, colleges, hospitals and health centres to name a few.

Ann Stevenson, Envirowise public sector programme manager in Wales, said, "This survey is vitally important to help us understand the impact the public sector in Wales has on the environment.

"Across the sector there is already a lot of good work going on to reduce waste, and this survey will help identify areas where further improvements can be made.  It will also help with the implementation of an effective waste minimisation programme and influence future waste policies, targets and strategies of the Welsh Assembly Government."

To encourage participation in the survey and to demonstrate the Wales public sector's commitment to improving global environments, for every 50 survey questionnaires received an acre of Mangrove forest will be planted in the Philippines.

All organisations that complete the survey can access funding for capital projects on a first come first served basis.

Public sector organisations will benefit from assisted survey completion, those that haven't yet completed the survey can find more information and further contact details at
