Further expansion of Vale Council's kitchen waste recycling scheme
19 February 2010
The Vale of Glamorgan Council’s successful kitchen waste recycling scheme is being extended to encompass the whole of Penarth and its surrounding area from Monday, 1 March.
Launched in February, 2009, a three-month pilot scheme covered 5,000 households and, after positive feedback, it was expanded to take in a further 2,000 residents in July.
The next phase of the kitchen waste roll out will take in an extra 12,500 households to cover the whole of Penarth and Dinas Powys. Two further villages, Michaelston-le-It and Leckwith, will also be included.
All residents will be provided with a kerbside caddy, a kitchen caddy and a supply of small biodegradable corn starch bags - enough for four bags per week for three months - to line the former. The kitchen waste will be collected on a weekly basis and there will be black bag collections on alternate weeks.
Vale Council cabinet member for visible and building services Cllr Geoff Cox commented:"We are delighted that more households are joining our popular and successful kitchen waste scheme. This is the first of three big kitchen waste roll outs we will be having over the next 12 months and I am confident the scheme will continue to be successful."
Residents in the new areas will receive a newsletter detailing the scheme and, with their caddy, a step-by-step guide on what can and cannot be included.
The scheme has long-term environmental benefits, and can also help residents save money, families being able to see exactly how much food they are wasting and thus adjust buying or cooking habits.
As part of the expansion programme, all householders in the next phase will be visited by a member of the council’s waste management team who will discuss the changes with residents.
