Every Can Counts is supported by the Public Sector Waste Minimisation Campaign (PSWMC) managed by Envirowise, which is intended to promote greater environmental efficiency in public sector organisations large and small throughout Wales.
‘Every Can Counts’ is a trial campaign to encourage more recycling by providing collection facilities for cans in workplaces, educational establishments and public spaces. To date the following organisations in Wales are working with the Every Can Counts campaign:
- Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council
- Caerphilly County Borough Council
- Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council
- University of Wales Newport
- Countryside Council for Wales
- Carmarthenshire County Borough Council
- Identity Passport Service
- Newport County Borough Council
- Bridgend County Borough Council
- National Library of Wales
- DVLA
- Welsh Local Government Association
- Coleg Llandrillo
- Aberystwyth University
TO DATE 14.8 TONNES OF CANS HAVE BEEN COLLECTED THROUGH THE SCHEME FOR RECYCLING!!
Every Can Counts is dedicated to putting the sustainable use of resources at the heart of UK business practice to implement drink can recycling. The Environment Minister, Jane Davidson has shown great support for the programme. The Minister recently visited the Identity and Passport Service (IPS) to showcase what is being seen as a clear benchmark for workplace recycling in Wales.
Environment Minister, Jane Davidson, said “I am very impressed by the recycling efforts of the Identity and Passport Service and would like to congratulate the staff on their achievements so far.”
The IPS launched the drinks can recycling programme in January this year in order to complement its existing recycling programme and reinvigorate workplace recycling amongst its 365 staff. Funding and support from PSWMC has enabled the production of communications materials and availability of recycling bins for Welsh public sector organisations, ensuring the 25 IPS Green Team volunteers can spread the green word throughout the organisation to ensure everyone is doing their bit for the environment. Envirowise public sector programme Manager, Ann Stevenson said: “Aluminium and steel, which are used to make drink cans, are infinitely recyclable and can be melted down and endlessly reused with absolutely no loss of quality. Reducing the amount of waste being sent to landfill is a key goal because doing so makes such environmental and financial sense.”
