Environment Act 1995
What is the Environment Act?
Environment Act 1995 is a United Kingdom Act of Parliament which created a number of new agencies and set new standards for environmental management.
It set up:
The Environment Agency
The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA)
The National Park authorities
It also:
- required the Secretary of State to prepare a National air quality strategy in England & Wales.
- required the Secretary of State to prepare a National waste strategy, with power to impose obligations on producers in England & Wales.
- required SEPA to prepare a National waste strategy.
- Improved the current protection of hedgerows
- created a new system whereby local authorities must identify, and if necessary, arrange for the remediation of contaminated sites in their areas.
