Cardiff man wins award for environmental excellence
12 February 2010
Cardiff based Jamie Lewis from Her Majesty’s Courts Service has been judged Wales’ shining Green Star Champion for 2010.
Jamie is celebrating after being named the Green Star Champion at the Wales Public Sector Waste and Sustainability Awards 2010 for his outstanding commitment to waste reduction.
He was nominated by a colleague and chosen by the judges because of the way he regularly goes above and beyond his job description in his efforts to improve the environmental performance of the Courts Service.
Jamie has shared best practice with colleagues across Wales and the UK and supported the implementation of increased recycling and waste minimisation.
Initiatives he has helped to introduce include; replacing individual waste bins with one communal one, double sided printing, use of tap water instead of bottled and recycling of obsolete mobile telephones and unwanted furniture.
Jamie said: “I am strongly committed to sustainability and to receive this sort of recognition really shows that all the hard work has been worthwhile.”
The winner was announced at the annual Wales Public Sector Waste and Sustainability Conference which included an awards ceremony for the first time.
The awards – which form part of Envirowise’s Public Sector Waste Minimisation Campaign which is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government – are the first of their kind in the UK and Europe.
Ann Stevenson, Envirowise public sector programme director in Wales, said, “These awards enable us to recognise and reward individuals and organisations in the Welsh public sector that are truly committed to resource efficiency and reducing waste. As part of the judging process we have visited a wide cross section of organisations and have been truly impressed by the efforts we have seen.”
