Awards launched to celebrate cleaner and greener public sector in Wales

11 November 2009

The search is on for the cleanest and greenest public sector organisations and employees in Wales who are helping the environment by minimising the waste they generate. The first Wales Public Sector Conference and Awards, to be held in February, will showcase the successful environmental improvement, sustainability and resource efficiency campaigns and projects that are happening across the country. And the Welsh Assembly Public Sector Waste Minimisation Campaign, run by Envirowise, wants to hear from those people and organisations who, in their every day work life, are making the difference to reduce material waste. There will be five categories; Resource Efficiency Excellence Award, Partnership Award, Sustainability Award, Innovation Award and Green Star Champion Award.

Ann Stevenson, Envirowise public sector programme director in Wales, said, “Across Wales the public sector is making great strides at reducing waste and we are looking for people or teams who have been particularly successful or enthusiastic. We know there is a lot of good work going on and our aim is to highlight the steps taken by individuals and groups within the public sector. There are many people who have already changed the way they work to avoid creating waste, thereby reducing environmental impact. “We hope that by celebrating the public sector’s excellent achievements to date we will be able publicise what can be done and encourage others to follow. We’re looking for people who've delivered environmental benefits, involved colleagues, and been innovative. But it doesn’t have to be anything technical or complex that they've done – simple measures that are effective will do just as well."

A conference will also be held at the event to discuss ways of developing effective partnerships to achieve sustainable waste reductions and how to access innovation in the context of sustainability and resource efficiency in the public sector. Ann added, "Our message is simple: share your successes with others to bring wider benefit to the environment.

If you think that your organisation, or someone specific within it, has excelled at improving your organisation’s environmental performance, then please nominate them.”
